The Biltmore and the Beach

Last Saturday we embarked on our trip to the Isle of Palms in South Carolina to spend the week with Lawrence's family.  Dick blessed us with the gift of a beach house for Christmas this year, and we were excited to spend the week in Wild Dunes.  Our road trip took us through North Carolina, and Lawrence arranged for us to break up the drive by spending Saturday night on the Biltmore estate in Ashville.  He and I had visited the Biltmore house with Rich and Lori when we were first married, but the kids had never been and now there is an Inn on the property where you can spend the night.  What a great way to start vacation!  I love, love, love the mountains, and the view from our room was beautiful.

We arrived in the afternoon and after freshening up we headed to Antler Hill Village to get some ice cream, see the winery and visit the petting zoo.

We look like the Vanderbilt's, right?

By late afternoon the kids were wearing down and were dying to order room service.  Lawrence and I shared a bottle of wine from the winery on the patio while the kids ordered, what else?  Pizza and chocolate chip cookies!

Oh, and John found the hotel robe and slippers.

God help us.
After the kids were settled Lawrence and I walked back down to the village to have dinner at Cedric's Pub, followed up by a chocolate martini for dessert while rocking in rocking chairs out on the veranda at the Inn.  Perfect night!  The next morning we had a wonderful brunch before heading over to tour the actual Biltmore Mansion.  INSANE.  The house is so amazing...it's unbelievable that a family actually used it as their home.

Just like home!
By lunchtime we were on the road to South Carolina.  Tomorrow I'll post about our first day at the beach!
